One of the first things people try to do when they are trying to lose weight is to cut out fat from their diet. It's normal – we are constantly being told that fat is bad for us.

However, cutting out fat is not the key to losing weight. There are definitely certain fats that should be avoided when you are trying to drop some pounds, but this is not the main thing you should be looking at. The secret to losing weight is cutting back the calories you take in. If your body is burning more calories than you are taking in, you lose weight – simple as that.

You should not be scared of fat. In fact, some fats are actually going to help you lose weight! Now before you stop reading and think I'm a nut job, let me go over the different types of fat and which ones are actually part of a healthy diet.

Saturated Fats – ok, this is one of the bad guys. Saturated fats come from animal products and are typically solid at room temperature. This is probably the worst type of fat for you as it has been linked to heart disease.

Monosaturated Fats – This is actually a decent fat as it lowers "bad cholestorol" (LDL) while leaving your "good cholestoral" (HDL) levels alone. Monosaturated fast are found in both canola and olive oils.

Polyunsaturated fats – This fat will lower both LDL and HDL levels. Remember, we do not want to lower HDL levels. Polyunsaturated fats are found in safflower oil, sunflower oil and corn oil.

Essential Fatty Acids – These guys are important! Essential fatty acids maintain the structure of your cell membranes (without going into the full details, this is a good thing!). They have also been linked to maintaining healthy bloodpressure levels, immune function and preventing blood clots. Some common foods that deliver EFAs are vegetable oils, fish, seeds, vegetables and grains.

Trans-Fatty Acids – These are found in lots of packaged foods and fast foods. This type of fast will increase LDL levels and lower HDL levels – the complete opposite of what you want. You guessed it – you want to avoid this type of fat.

Remember – not all fat is bad! Do not obsess over the amount of fat you take in, just remember to limit the calories you consume if you are trying to lose weight.

Eats lots of fresh, wholesome foods and avoid processed foods. By doing this, you will avoid taking in the "bad fats" and give your body the healthy fats it needs. If you are trying to burn fat and lose weight, make sure to lower the amount of calories you take in and eat a well balanced diet. It may sound obvious, but it's the only way to start losing weight.
